Reasonable early season fishing likely at Chew Valley Lake

Conditions are not ideal but fishable at Chew Valley Lake. The ripple should help fish move and feed more confidently.

One of England's Big Four reservoirs and arguably the finest for specimen browns. The exceptional fertility drives prolific buzzer hatches that begin earlier and last longer than most reservoirs. Together with its twin Blagdon, it forms the historic heart of West Country reservoir fly fishing. The evening sedge fishing in July and August is legendary — fish rise freely to large caddis patterns. Autumn fry feeding produces specimens. A must-visit for serious stillwater anglers.

Boat drift recommended

A gentle ripple is ideal for drifting — broadside drift covering the wind lanes should be productive.

Approach

Start with Black Buzzer (12-14) on a slow figure-of-eight or hang under indicator. If that does not produce, switch depth or speed before changing the pattern entirely.

🌱 This is peak season for the venue, though today's conditions aren't quite ideal. Worth fishing — the timing is right even if the weather isn't perfect.

What to watch
