Reasonable early season fishing likely at Blagdon Lake

Conditions are not ideal but fishable at Blagdon Lake. The ripple should help fish move and feed more confidently.

The cradle of stillwater fly fishing. Blagdon has been fished for trout since 1904 and Dr H.A. Bell's pioneering nymph fishing here changed the sport forever. More traditional in character than Chew — the wet fly drift on a breezy day is classic. Specimen browns are a real feature. The autumn fishing can be exceptional.

Boat drift recommended

A gentle ripple is ideal for drifting — broadside drift covering the wind lanes should be productive.

Approach

Start with Black Buzzer (12-14) on a slow figure-of-eight or hang under indicator. If that does not produce, switch depth or speed before changing the pattern entirely.

🌱 This is peak season for the venue, though today's conditions aren't quite ideal. Worth fishing — the timing is right even if the weather isn't perfect.

What to watch

The best window in early season is often late morning through the afternoon as the water warms.

Plan B: If nothing responds, try a slow-retrieved small lure through the deeper water.
Why this advice?
